We are currently looking for an Advocate to join our team!
Advocate
The Advocate will provide trauma-informed advocacy services for
clients impacted by domestic violence, sexual violence, and other interpersonal abuse and trauma. (comprising 80% of work time).
Responsibilities include:

Exhibit congruence between the mission and values of James House and interaction with the community/clients
-
Thoroughly understand and abide by James House’s policies and correctly implement all procedures -
Respond quickly and appropriately to hotline calls from survivors, family members and friends, and other service providers during business hours -
Assist as assigned to hotline coverage for after business hours and holidays to include Lethality Assessment calls from local police departments -
Provide voluntary trauma-informed, culturally sensitive services, including, but not limited to:
○ Supportive Counseling, advocacy, and support groups
○ Support for clients as they develop safety plans, build support networks, process
trauma, and heal from abuse
○ Relevant and appropriate referrals for client’s legal, medical, financial, housing,
and related needs

Ensure accurate and timely documentation and reports, including “Documenting Our Work”, client satisfaction surveys, and Vadata -
Facilitate support groups and group activities for clients as appropriate -
Assist with in-kind donations -
In order to actively promote James House’s mission, the Advocate will support the following activities: (comprising 20% of the time) -
In conjunction with the Prevention & Outreach Specialist, coordinate outreach activities around interpersonal violence -
Foster organizational and infrastructure development

Represent James House on select coalitions, caucuses, and task forces -
Organize and/or participate in community events, forums, training events, and cultural celebrations -
Conduct basic administrative/maintenance tasks to contribute to the smooth functioning of office operations -
Advocate for key policy issues -
Housekeeping -
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
● Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
● Ability to maintain a compassionate and professional approach while working with
people in crisis situations, who are of diverse ethnic, religious, national, educational,
language, sexual orientation, cultural, and class backgrounds.
● Excellent writing, public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills
● Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to multi-task
● Strong computer skills, experience with Google tools and Microsoft products
● Demonstrate effective, critical thinking strategies and appropriate decision-making
● Knowledge of the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties, reliable transportation, a valid VA
state driver’s license, and in-force automobile insurance
● Ability to work independently with little supervision
● Excellent interpersonal skills
● Successful background check
