Strengthening Communities, Empowering People, Making a Difference

Who We Are

How we do our work is as important as the work we do.

Since 1989, The James House (TJH), a non-governmental, non-profit organization, has been committed to providing comprehensive, cost-free services for people who have been affected by sexual violence, domestic violence, and stalking. We are governed by a board of directors who believe in our mission.

By providing mission driven, client centered, culturally relevant services through case management plans, we help clients create outcomes that address life satisfaction, hope and optimism, empowerment and knowledge about issues associated with interpersonal violence and the services available to address these issues. Our ultimate goal is to assure client self-sufficiency and sustainable change through coaching and empowering strategies.

Our services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, court and hospital accompaniment, safety planning, private counseling, support groups, case management, a resource library, transitional services, food vouchers, emergency pet placement, and referrals to community resources. All of our services are free and confidential.

We also provide technical support and training for allied service professionals, schools, houses of worship, law enforcement and community groups at no cost.

The James House is the only accredited program helping people who have been affected by sexual and domestic violence in the Tri-Cities area, including the communities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Surry, Ettrick, Enon, and Matoaca, Virginia, as well as the soldiers and their families in Fort Lee. Our team of highly-skilled Client Services Coordinators participate in ongoing training and education in order to provide the best possible services.

As the only accredited sexual and domestic violence intervention and prevention service program serving the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties, we receive grant funding from multiple state and federal agencies as well as local foundations. Therefore, you, your family, your business and your school never need to pay for services.
